Block Phenomenology of Prayer #2
Phenomenology of
Prayer discusses the two concepts of the sacred. One being phenomenology
and the other being the sense of the sacred as coming into the world by
incarnating itself. The author states, “Phenomenology is the study of
appearing, but the sacred seems to signify what cannot appear” (pg. 64). The author
states different examples explaining the otherness of the god and how it doesn’t
always fit into the context of normal things. An example of this context is “earthly
economy,” which is explained as the system of exchange through which things
come to us. The author also discusses how the notion of incarnation involves
kenosis. He states, “this self-emptying can be seen as a response to the
problem raised by the biblical concept of the alterity of God” (pg. 65).
