Block Wilderness Therapy
While writing my research paper on long distance hiking as
therapy, I came across a lot of articles that discussed the benefits of hiking
for PTSD survivors. Everything I read about described how people who suffered
from PTSD found solace in the wilderness by emerging themselves in a
judgment-free zone. These survivors were able to walk alone and enter a state
of flow, which brought them peace. They were able to confront their fears and
spend time alone walking to work through those fears. Many other stories also
expressed how solo hikes and solo kayaking excursions not only allowed them
time for deep self-reflections, but also the ability to connect with a higher
power. These experiences allowed survivors to be more motivated to reconnect
with their families, get in better shape, and make more positive changes in
their lives.
