[Mythic Landscapes: The Mountain That Was God] [Landscapes of the Sacred]
Interaction with landscapes allows man to feel the innate connection to nature that has been drawn apart since the advancement of human civilizations. We have been taken out of place and been placed in containers that allow us to operate more efficiently. When man re-enters place he is overtaken by the realization of the sublime, and feels a connection with God, only attainable through our interaction with nature.
To show an appreciation for the welcoming nature of Place, one cannot attempt to leave any material asset as a symbol of that appreciation. Lane discloses that one valued gift that someone can give to nature is their thanks. He describes his contact with each object in his journey, and how this touch transmitted his grace for the place. The thanks that one gives forms a bond between person and place that allows him to understand and observe the spirit of the place or genius loci.
Is this euphoric feeling a result of experience of the unknown, or is this feeling a way for God to communicate his presence within Place?
