Halter Disney & Engineered Happiness

Topic of Choosing

In class, Disney was discussed as a sacred place. How is it sacred? Well, Disney falls under the second axiom of “sacred place is ordinary place, ritually made extraordinary.” However, the happiness that comes from experiences at Disney differs from other sacred places. Disney has created the happiness that people experience when they’re there; it’s an “engineered happiness.” The workers that constantly smile, the music, the rides, and the people in costumes are all portrayed as happy, but they are forced to be that way, therefore, the happiness isn’t coming naturally. The topic prompted my thought of how much happiness is actually engineered? Humans may unfortunately be blind to other things creating/engineering that artificial happiness. It's important to focus on the times of happiness where the feeling was unplanned and truly coming from the heart and then we can distinguish engineered happiness from pure happiness.
