Halter Landscapes of the Sacred

In the Landscapes of The Sacred, an excerpt states that “a sacred place constitutes a break in the homogeneity of space.” The break symbolizes a passageway from one cosmic region to another is made possible (heaven to earth). This communication is referred to as axis mundi meaning “in the middle”, “navel of the earth”, or “the Center of the World.” It is assumed that a place in which someone significantly communicates with a higher being is sacred. According to the first axiom in this book, sacred place is not chosen, it chooses you. Therefor how can axis mundi be the center of the world if sacred places choose you? God is never confined to one single location; he reveals himself only where he wills. This is why you can’t search for an axis mundi or sacred place because it will find you when it wills itself to. Therefore, I think this means axis mundi is not confined to one place or one center, what confines axis mundi is God and your readiness to experience a spiritual enlightenment.
