Helmer Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture

In chapter one, the author describes pilgrimage as a liminoid process. It begins to describe the liminal phases and aspects in life. Turner describes the liminoid process as one that causes a change or transition one goes through in their life. We go through processes like this each day, but for it to be considered as liminal, it has to cause a dramtic change in one's life. Liminility is not only a transition but also potentiality, not only "going to be" but also "what may be". I have experienced liminility in my life, when I left home for college. I was prepared for what was coming, but it was a huge change having all my friends from high school also leaving, and each going our separate ways. Being separated from the people I had been with for so many years was hard and caused much me much emotion. This experience wasn't really life changing, but it was a huge transition unlike any other I have ever had to go through.
