Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture

Pilgrimage provides a connection between human and the supernatural. It has become a liminal place for people to experience the sacred. However, Turner presents another coinciding argument that pilgrimage "offers liberation from profane social structures that are symbiotic with a specific religious system." In today's society, people become so consumed with politics, money, and other material goods, that they disregard the notion of the supernatural and the supernatural even becomes difficult to connect with in an increasingly exclusive world. However, Turner says that pilgrimage is able to provide this liminal environment so that pilgrims can experience the sacred communication that they are seeking. Pilgrims are able to find new found freedom from the mundane structures of society.
