Kinnaman- Ch. 2 Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture

The reading discusses Mexican Pilgrimages and the myth and history behind them. “Some of the important shrines are the sites of reported apparitions (of the Virgin or other saints); some possess statues, crucifixes, or pictures held to have miraculous properties; others (though […] rare for Mexico) have martyrs’ or saints’ relics believed to be endowed with curative powers; while still others have achieved fame through their antiquity and historic associations”. Some of the unique characteristics of the shrines include: “mysterious lights, celestial harmonies, [and] demonstrations of adoration and respect by some animals […]”. Among the highlighted topics of this reading were Our Lady of Guadalupe in Spain and Mexico, the village of Zapopan in Jalisco state, the village of Chalma in Mexico state, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Octotlán, and The Querétaro Pilgrimage to Guadalupe.
