Lett- Landscapes of the Sacred- Chapter 8
A knock on American spirituality in regards to sacred place is that Americans have a culture of a lack of patience. Americans generally have a culture centered around mobility and placlessness, meaning they do not stay in the same place for very often. It is questioned in the reading that after so many traditional cultures have shown passion for sacred place, is it still able to be found in American consciousness? In American culture, it is assumed to be a sign of failure or being unambitious to stay in one place in life. These readings challenge me a little, after reflection it does appear that the everyday culture as Americans is to keep moving on in life without ever really taking the time to appreciate the current. To quote the book "..while Americans are continually physical in passage, their quest is always for an Odyssean sense of home" Their is always a next move in our culture, everyday the goal is to make another dollar to eventually obtain a sort of happiness or obtain personal property or place. If as a country we made it a priority to take a moment to appreciate the current events instead of always worrying about the future, true happiness would likely be easier to obtain. That happiness that cannot be obtained through financial gain that is.
