In the summer of 2016, i had the opportunity to travel to Havana, Cuba to minister to people through baseball. The love my team and i received was surreal. People allowed us into their homes, cooked for us, and included us as if we were one. The people i met on this trip changed my life and my perspective on how fortunate i am as an American to have true free will and speech. In relation to sacred place, we visited many churches while we were in Havana. We donated bikes to pastors and donated clothes and baseball equipment to children. However, some of the churches we visited had no building, some of the churches were in the back yards of peoples homes. In American Culture, we become focused on the tangible items and properties that come with things like church instead of worrying about the true importance which is fellowship. The services that i was apart of in actual backyards were more heartfelt then some I have been too in big expensive churches with hundreds of people. I believe it is important for us all to realize that worship is about you and God connecting. The church space, or lack there of does not matter. God tells us to come as we are. Being able to have this perspective was truly eye opening, as it has helped me to appreciate the smaller things in my life back home. Taking this class has helped remind me that sacred space is not chosen by us, but revealed to us by God and is made holy by the hearts of those who take part in genuine worship.
