Sensuous Encounter - Christina Lobosco

While reading this excerpt, I was drawn to the prominent point talking about walking to remember.  I have heard this before, but not necessarily with the same motive. I have had a newfound respect for hiking because of the passion people have towards it.  Hiking on trails provides an escape, whether through interactions or solitude. Stated in the text, people walk to remember, but they also could walk to forget.  But I did notice that the pilgrims who walk the trail guided by religion or a spiritual awakening get a better understanding of themselves after leaving the trail.  Not only does spiritually provide connection to the nature around us, but deepens the relationships with your companions. Expressed towards the end of this section of writing, it was mentioned that the long distance hikers who walk the trail connect with similar spiritual experiences as the “traditional pilgrims.”

There are so many underlying benefits of walking these long distance trails, so much so, the traveler has the opportunity to be both human and superhuman.  One with nature, one with God, and one with themselves. Another important underlying theme that I was aware of in this excerpt was the importance of enjoyment on the trail.  While battling constant challenges on this journey, the connections between friendships are strengthened and the memories made are everlasting. The trails are outlets to escape reality and explore the unknown.
