Topic of Choice - Earl Shaffer
When Earl Shaffer first thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1948,
he completed a task that many had thought was impossible. He hiked the over
2,000-mile trail without ceasing until he reached the top of Mount Katahdin. He
did so with poor equipment and without prior knowledge on long-distance hikes. However,
his impact is still seen today in the thousands of hikers that venture out on
the Appalachian Trail each year. Shaffer took his time on the trail to reflect
on his life and kept a very well-written trail journal, which eventually was
used as proof that he actually completed the trail. Shaffer first started his
hike to “walk of the war.” In doing so, he has inspired countless veterans to
take to long-distance hiking to combat their awful memories of war. Since then,
there have been programs such as Warrior Expeditions that help veterans complete
hikes as a way to walk off their own experiences and transition back into
society.
