Give Me Liberty! An American History by Eric Foner (chapter 9)The Market Revolution emphasized individualism, the principle of being self-reliant. The Second Great Awakening added a religious foundation of “personal self-improvement, self-reliance, and self-determination”. Church attendance in the young republic quickly grew and eventually, peaked in the 1820s and early 1830s. Christianity became a fundamental principle to American culture. It is insisted that every person was a “moral free agent” meaning, individuals may choose between leading a life of Christianity or leading a life of sin.
