Personal Religious History-Topic of Choice 3
I was raised in an atheist household. Both of my parents were raised Christians but ended up leaving the church in their late teens. For my mother, she remembers an exact day she left. In her history class, she was learning about a lot of American fought wars, such as the world wars and the Vietnam war. She was shown the figures of how many people were killed on all sides of the war. She had been taught in church that God loves all his children. She wondered why and how her God would allow for such incredible violence and hatred to happen. She figured, if her God truly loved everyone, he would not let this happen. She could not understand how someone could let families be fatherless and allow for so much pain. If a being was all powerful and wanted people to feel love why didn't he stop this? She asked her pastor this question. Her pastor didn't have an answer. This was the day she decided that what she had been told could not be right.
My thoughts are in line with my mom's. I have a hard time believing that I should love a God that picks what cultural groups of people get to live in constant pain and starvation, while others lead lavish lives, which ones get to fight their own kind to the death, while others have the power and authority to tell those people to do so from a comfortable distance.
Religion has been the root cause for countless deaths, through war, genocide, and home front violence (ex. the Crusades, Nazi attempted elimination of Jews, Sunni vs Shia on going attacks.) A God I choose to love and obey would not let his children kill each other.
