Roberts Image and Pilgrimage

In the book Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, there is a passage that discuses a pilgrim's new-found freedom from the boring, everyday life. The main way a pilgrim's experience is made extraordinary, is by the view of religious buildings, pictures, and statues. How does a building or a statue make one's experience so great? A religious building or statue is something that one may not see everyday. All it may take is a new experience with God or the spiritual other, to be able to change the life of a pilgrim. This is extremely fascinating because there are many beautiful statues, paintings, and buildings in other countries that can be the most amazing sight one may ever have.
